Jim Rohn said that one of the most important skills you can learn is How To Prioritize Your Resources. Life is about resources. Time, energy, money, attention. They’re all resources that shape the way our lives occur around us.
In this piece I will share with you how to prioritize your tasks so you’re not wasting unnecessary time or energy, then I’ll share with you how our mind actually works in task engagement and how we should go about in accomplishing our tasks to start creating the life we want to create.
Everyone has the same amount of hours in a day. What makes successful people different from others? They know how to prioritize properly. When you prioritize your actively engaging in your success. When you’re not prioritizing you’re actively self-sabotaging your future.
The ‘Important’ Checklist:
- It will effect many people or projects if incomplete
- Other tasks depend on its completion
- It contributes a lot of value
- It’s low effort-high results (80/20 principle)
The ‘Urgent’ Checklist:
- It is overdue
- It is due soon
- It demands immediate attention
- The consequences of not doing it are immediate
Platinum rule to Task Orientation!
DO WHAT YOU DON’T WANT TO DO FIRST!
You have the most motivation for something when you don’t want to do it. Let me rephrase. When you first think of the very thing that you don’t want to do. That’s a sign that it needs to be done. Do the thing you least want to do first in the beginning of your day. When you do this then the rest of the day gets easier and easier. Here is how we categorize tasks in our minds.
1.Things you don’t want to do, and actually don’t need to do. (MOST PEOPLE TO DO THIS)
2. Things you don’t want to do, but actually need to do. (MOST PEOPLE DON’T DO THIS)
3. Things you want to do and actually need to do. (PASSIONATE PEOPLE DO THIS)
4. Things you want to do, but actually don’t need to do. (MANY PEOPLE DO THIS)
If all of these task orientations get too overwhelming then ask yourself this one simple question.
WHAT IS IT THAT I NEED TO DO RIGHT NOW TO MAKE WHAT I WANT HAPPEN!?
Whenever I have too many things going on at once and I start to get overwhelmed I ask myself this simple questions. This simple question realigns you with the most important task at hand. When our brain is juggling too many bits of information it can get overwhelming. However, when you ask this question you immediately bring precision, focus, and immediacy back to your day.
